Feedback and replies

The Auto-Activate Android chart system has been running since mid June 2017, and 100's have been sold online since... and more bundled with other products.  Support issues have been minimal.

We asked buyers for some feedback, and asked these questions:

Were the instructions clear enough ?   Was the whole process straightforwards ?   Anything you think we could do to improve the process ?

Below are some representative comments

"It worked really smoothly.  Much easier than the last time I did it. So easily that I don't remember the details!"

"I guess the various steps involved are considered necessary to prevent fraud. Anyway the instructions were reasonably straightforward, worked first time, and were well worth the effort."     (Note: It's because the licensing of the charts is dealt with totally outside of the Google Play Store infrastructure and unconnected to your Google account)

"Auto activate worked perfectly and the whole process was much easier and quicker than the one last year - well done!!"

"Very easy and much better than the old way which required awaiting emails and a sense of hassling your good selves.
Great software and site."

"Generally very impressed with the whole process. Maps are very good. I was going to buy a plotter and someone recommended using this file and navigator on my tablet, which I did.   I have installed the app and maps on both my tablet and my phone as a backup.
I initially had a "Corrupt file" message so downloaded the maps again and all was fine.
Marine navigator seems to be excellent and I have used it several times now. I have also emailed Mr Koenig personally to congratulate him on such a great app.".

"I have successfully installed your charts on my Lenono  android tablet  into Ronald Koenig's Marine Navigator app.
Although I found the installation process rather difficult, I think the problem was mine... How could it have been made easier? Not sure because when I followed your video instructions vigorously, it went well.  So, thanks.....and thanks for your help when my previous tablet died and it became necessary to install on the replacement."

"Several months ago there was a thread on the YBW forums from people experiencing difficulties in downloading charts from your site. Given that you have since invested in a more straightforward process I thought it appropriate to add to the post to share my positive experience.  I haven't as yet used the app a great deal. I was at my boat earlier this week and used the "track" feature without problem. I'll be trying the route planning feature shortly. So far, so good!

I've no idea how to give feedback via Google Play but I'll take a look."

"I have been delighted with the service and advice received from VisitMyHarbour.

Although a little nervous at first, as a complete newbie as regards tablets etc. was advised exactly which model to get, how to get the downloads, set the tablet up etc.  Your brilliant video, together with written instructions, enabled me to read first, so had everything ready, then watch and stop video as I installed the charts.  Voila piece of cake!

All of your instructions are clear, concise and almost idiot proof but if something is not quite understood (from lack of knowledge rather than clear instructions) your brilliant team are to hand to explain/point in right direction.

Brilliant piece of kit thank you."

Some issues worth looking at:

"Yes, nice and easy and the charts work well.  Haven’t any adverse comments at all.  I only use them for ‘emergency’ only e.g.  in fog or when it’s dark coming into an unfamiliar anchorage etc. as I prefer to use paper charts.  I needed to update the charts I had from you originally a few years ago in any case which brings me to the only gripe I have.  I wanted to use the tablet for a foggy episode earlier on this year but the charts didn’t load up.  I reasoned that they were out on date.  It would be helpful if there was some way of knowing that they had a limited lifespanThere perhaps is and I missed it!  Best regards and thanks"

Comment: The chartsets do not expire or self destruct. I suspect in your case you had a chart installation prior to April 2015. Google changed app permissions, and Mr Koenig had to make new version of his app to deal with this. Existing installations needed to be migrated to the new system.  I suspect your app updated itself some time ago, and the pre-existing charts needed "migrating".  (This caused us much support work through 2015)

Always worth testing the app/chart combo before setting out.. just to be sure.    Troubleshooting guide

"Yes, the process went smoothly after sorting out one hiccup.  Last year's chart set was listed in Marine Navigator but not operational;  Marine Navigator had been reinstalled via playstore on a new tablet so presumably some data was restored as well, but maybe not the actual chart files.

I thought I would try out your new system - the old files were from a dongle installation.

It was not until this old chart set was deleted that the new chart set would load properly.  While the old chart set was there, the new chart set went through the loading process very quickly (a matter of a few seconds), seeming simply to take the file names.

Hope this helps.  Let me know if you want any more info"

Comment:  Sounds like the "new" download was trying to update the old installation... Always best to do a completely fresh install.  Uninstall the app completely..that removes any existing loaded charts. If you have old chart downloads knocking around, delete them too. Install app afresh from play store (free for existing app owners)., and start from scratch.   Troubleshooting guide

"Many thanks for your interest. Unfortunately the charts wouldn't load and so I can't use them. However, I think that it is my tablet that has virtually run out of memory that is the trouble! I am visiting my son who is a computer wizard next month and hope that he can sort it for me. Maybe I will have to buy a new tablet. I'll let you know how I get on."

Comment: There could be a couple of possibilities here, and we are standing by to help.  First possibility is as you suggest.  Maybe the tablet is full.  You need twice the size of the download spare for the app to install the charts. 2 to 4 GB spare space.  After installation you can delete the original download, freeing up 1 - 2 GB.  We don't recommend trying to install on an external SD card.. although it can be done.

Other possibilities:  App appears OK, you have done the chart download.. BUT when you try and "Import" using the app, it does NOT "see" the downloaded chart package.

The second possibility is that you haven't downloaded the complete chartset..but only have a partial download for one reason or another. The app won't see this.  Check the name and size of your chart download package in a file manager.  Actual sizes are by the "Add to Basket" button where you buy them.

(Check your downloads folder verify the size of download is correct)

The third possibility is that you have a "bad" installation of the Marine Navigator app itself.. we have seen this before. In this case go to play store and Un-Install the app completely.  Turn tablet off completely.  Leave 10 mins, turn it back on, and go back to play store, and install the app afresh.  Then see if it will "see" and import the charts.
