General Description

Lymington is a very attractive and fairly large town on the edge of the New Forest. ... read more

Approach

Entry to the Lymington River is straightforward, but approach needs to be made from some distance off

as salt marshes and shoal water extend a good distance from the shore.   A well marked but twisting channel  leads through the shallows to the harbour, but at most states of the tide there appears to be a vast expanse of water.

Pilotage information to help the newcomer Firstly there is a good video of the approach and berths on the harbour website at:

Update May 2022
Written by Don Thomson 3 | 31st May 2022
I reviewed these notes back in April 2022 but delayed the editing in the hopes that their new amenities block would open on Town Quay and, today on the 31st May I'm delighted to inform you that they will be handed over to the HM tomorrow!!
Lymington Town Quay

Friendly and intimate atmoshere compared with the big marinas. New finger pontoons are bookable; places on outside of this pontoon still allow rafting I believe. Apparently some plans for new shower block in car park turned down by council so rethink required as current facilities looking a bit tired.
We paid £40 (week night) and £43 (weekend night) for 37'
Wightlink Ferries

The ferries run ‘roughly’ every hour, not every 30 minutes as in the Flashman text.
UPDATE SPRING 2021
Written by Don Thomson 3 | 21st Apr 2021
We received corrections to previous notes from the Lymington HM which have been incorporated in the text. The notes by Garry Flashman have remained unedited but some of his reflections may now be out of date.
Town Quay

One of the nicest and cheapest alongside berths in the Solent has been done up, as is becoming well known (see below). Lots of individual berths, with water and electricity, which some will welcome, but at a price: the cost for my 26' Centaur increased from £14 to £20 for the night. None of that chummy rafting up.any more (possibly a covid advantage) with all the early-morning entertainment that involves, and there's no sign of an improvement to the heads to accommodate the inevitably increasing demand.

There's an excellent Indian restaurant immediately you enter the high street on the right, but the rather nice tea shop a little way up the hill on the left has, sadly, closed down.
New layout at town quay

Visited the Town Quay in July 2020. Impressed by the extended layout providing some finger berths and able to cater for more visitors without the need to raft up. Prices still a good deal lower than the marina's.

UPDATE SPRING 2020
Written by Don Thomson 3 | 12th Mar 2020
I reviewed these notes in March 2020. The pontoon layout up at the Town Quay differs depending on which chart to consult - the least up to date is possibly the UKHO!! Prices are up again this year and I have uploaded this years UKHO Chart.
UPDATE SPRING 2018

Much the same as our last update. Prices up across the board and we have uploaded this years chart
Update Spring 2016
Written by dononshytalk | 9th Mar 2016
These notes were reviewed by Don in March 2016. There have been price changes across the board and you may find that the HM will encourage you to tie up to the Dan Bran pontoon rather than the Town Quay.
Update April 2014
Written by dononshytalk | 1st Apr 2014
We have revised these notes for the 2014 season and adjusted prices. The main change is that I have changed the tenor of the notes for Lymington Marina which, although it has no dedicated visitor berths seldom finds it necessary to turn visitors away (the HM there can't remember when this last happened). So we have treated it in the same way as we would a facility with allocated visitor berths.

Update January 2013
Written by dononshytalk | 15th Jan 2013
The Harbour Notes for Lymington have been updated by Don T on the 15th January 2013. The buoyage in the vicinity of the Lymington Yacht Haven has changed since our last update in 2010; our Approach Notes have been corrected to reflect this and the most recent chart (June 2012) is in the images gallery. The large Dan Bran pontoon is being furnished with shore power but the 2013 charges for this have not yet been finalised. All other charges have been updated for the 2013 season.

Tom Webb, around Britain on a 21' Beneteau 2011
Written by Tom Webb Sailing | 31st Oct 2011
31/8-1/9 – Lymington – Lymington is the most significant port I feel, it signifies being back in the Solent and back at home, I stayed in Lymington Yacht haven where I was very generously donated a berth by Mary Faulk, the yacht haven is fantastic with a berthing master in a rib at the entrance guiding you in and impeccable shore based facilities. When entering there is a narrow well marked channel that you must stick to, the Isle of Wight ferry also leaves from this channel so be wary to pass port to port and give plenty of room.
