Updating charts on the Tough Tab.. difficult

You bought one of our Tough Tabs in 2019, now you want your free 2019 to 2020 update yes ?

Easy bit first:  If your Tough Tab did NOT come with the Extras pack, and has NO  plug in SD card... it's really quite simple.  Just do as everyone else does, and update as shown  HERE

IF it came with the extras pack, it would (unless it was one of the first few in April), have a double chart installation.  One install on the plug in SD card, and one on the internal storage.  THIS makes it really tricky to do the update, as it will need doing 2 times. It's not that easy, as we know full well having done the original double installation !

SO..first off, if you don't feel confident about this.. or you try and then mess it up.. we can sort it for you.  Send it back here (signed for) with Pink Slip, a covering note and £10.. 1st class postage stamps to that value will do..or a note..not a cheque please (£2.50 bank chgs...) Remove any personal stuff/Google Account before sending. Make sure it does not need a password to open it. This MUST be done before 1st week of April 2020.  We will sort and return quickly.

OK..here goes.  As supplied, the Tough Tab with Extras pack was set to use the external plug in SD card as default storage.  You can check this for yourself, by looking in   SETTINGS >>> STORAGE where you shoud see this:

Note SD card set as default write disk

If this is the case when you look, we're ready to start on the external SD card chart installation. ( If this is NOT the case, first try ticking the SD card box as above.  Turn tablet off then on again, re-check it's showing as above.  Next start Marine Navigator..and make sure it's all working as it should before going further).

Fully download the correct update pack from the standard update page   HERE

Once it's downloaded CHECK using your file manager app, EXCATLY where it has gone

It should be in the Downloads folder of the EXTERNAL SD card, as above

IF you have downloaded it as above, and it's not in "Downloads" check for a folder called "My Favourites", look in there,  it will probably be there...  CUT and PASTE the update file into "Downloads", check Marine Navigator can find it.

Next, turn tablet off then on again. Start Marine Navigator, and check you can see the update ready to import...

Note: Marine Navigator seems to be looking in 2 places at once.  In our case the UPDATE is on SDcard0, the ORIGINAL 2019 install is within Downloads on what is now SDcard1.. but I can see both.  Told you this was tricky...

Then follow the standard update instructions  HERE

Cannot emphasise enough.. don't delete the existing 2019 chartset in Marine Navigator, if you cannot see the update ready to import.

Once the update is imported into the app it will STILL be called a 2019 chartset name.  BUT the charts in it will have been swapped for 2020 charts.  You need to check ..like this:

If you are seeing this all is well, and you have updated the chartset on the EXTERNAL  SD card..well done !

Part 2.  Here we are going for the INTERNAL installation.   We will UNMOUNT and REMOVE the external SD card, check Marine Navigator "falls back" to using the internal installation.. and update THAT installation...

Got to:  SETTINGS>>>STORAGE  and UNMOUNT the SD card.. (Note never remove the SD card without UNMOUNTING it first)

The external SD card will be unmounted, and you'll get a message that it's safe to remove. At this stage open the flap at the top of the tablet (residue from peeling the sticker should be scrubbed off before opening the port). Locate the SD card which is the smaller slot on the left hand side if tablet screen is facing you.  Use the little tool to push it in and it will eject. Bit tricky to get it out totally.  Get it out and put aside safely.  This CAN be done with the tablet ON.

Turn tablet off then on again.

Now test Marine Navigator app is still working and fallen back to internal installation.  It will still have 2019 charts.. check the bottom RH corner to confirm.

Fully download (for a 2nd time)  the correct update pack from the standard update page   HERE

Once it's downloaded CHECK using your file manager app, EXCATLY where it has gone. In file manager it should look like this:

Now you can be sure that... 1. You are running on internal storage  2. The Update is in the Downloads folder on internal storage.

IF you have downloaded it as above, and it's not in "Downloads" check for a folder called "My Favourites", look in there,  it will probably be there...  CUT and PASTE the update file into "Downloads", check Marine Navigator can find it.

Start Marine Navigator, and check you can see the update ready to import...

OK, the update has been applied to both EXTERNAL and INTERNAL installations.  Now put the SD card back into it's slot at top of tablet.  You will be offered to make it default write disk, do so...

Test Marine Navigator is working again.. it will be running from the external SD card now.

Clearing up

Once you are happy that the double update has been done OK, you can then use your File Manager app to look in Downloads on BOTH  SD card storage spaces, one at a time.  The Update download will be in both Download folders on the 2 SD cards.  Both can be deleted safely now.. check the box to the LH side of them, then the rubbish bin icon at top of page. .. gone !
