Comment:
"I'm very impressed with SeaClear on the
USB Dongle. I bought it for use on my 20' Hardy Bosun but last night took it to
work (I'm a Pilot) with my 7" Asus to try out "in action". Superb, my days of
scanning and calibrating are over.
Do you have experience good or otherwise of use
with a AIS Pilot Plug (usb) with SeaClear?
Best Regards,
and many thanks. Martin."
Magazine Review
2011
Charts for SeaClear, and our wireless GPS were fully reviewed and
discussed in "Sailing Today" magazine, Feb 2012 issue, pages 43 and 44.
It earned the Sailing Today "Recommended" tag and 4 out of 5 possible stars.
Improvements in the 2012 edition:- Feature: The whole package is now installed on your computer(s). The DVD or USB only acts as an "ignition key" Benefit:
Lightning speed, no whirring DVDs or sticking out USBs. Ease of use, no
drive letter conflicts, full SeaClear functionality assured. (but
printing disabled). Not locked to any one machine.
- Feature: Comprehensive embedded help section, by technical author Ricahard Fairman BA. Benefit: Easy to run "Help" in another window, while you are getting used to SeaClear.
Who is this for? What could I do with this package ?
This
DVD/USB dongle package is for anyone who has a boat of any kind,
from kayaks to motor yachts, dinghies to liveaboard cruisers...or anyone
who's simply interested in our coastlines, from birdwatchers to hot air
baloonists, divers, shipwatchers, harbour offices, etc
For those who use paper charts, the package offers the following useful functions:

Have you ever wondered if your own paper charts
are so out of date that they are in fact a work of fiction ? Are you
navigating using a mouldering pile of uncorrected charts you acquired
two boats ago ? Can you rely on them or do they really need replacing
? Do your old paper charts show current TSS
schemes. Compare your older paper charts to
our latest offerings and decide if you will correct them, or
replace maybe several with just one or two small scale charts.
Also, you can snag A4 custom chartlets for printing, nothing like it when entering a new harbour
Use the package to do your passage planning at home:
Use
SeaClear to do your route planning and prepare waypoint lists...all
using the best and latest charts. Watch tutorial videos.. check out the links at the right hand side of this page
And maybe think about...
Bringing
your laptop and power supply to the boat, hooking up a GPS to SeaClear
and trying out real time electronic navigation. SeaClear
offers a great way to stick with chart styles you are truly used
to...but navigate on them electronically, rather than with pencil and
ruler. See how when you start SeaClear it will now
position you centre screen, on the best chart available.
Now try it at sea, alongside your paper charts...
For those with small chart plotting GPS sets

Ha !
I've got one of
these ! No doubt very useful and reassuring at
sea on passage. But with its 5 inch screen located down at the chart
table... what use is it as you are making your grand entrance into a
strange harbour? And when was the last time you
updated the charts in it ?
Can your plotter produce decent printed A4 charts ? Can
you see the screen in sunlight ?
Once again, harbour pilotage is always
best done with a manageable chartlet in your
hand.
Can
you plan your passage at home on these gadgets ? Why not plan using
the up to date large scale raster charts in SeaClear, snag the Waypoint/Route
listings you've made...and enter them in your onboard unit when you
start you passage.
Raster vs. Vector
Finally, most dedicated chartplotters use vector charts which tend to look like a poor quality arcade game compared to raster charts, which are exact copies of official paper charts.

"At the UK Hydrographic Office, and many other national Hydrographic Offices, vector data (ENC) is created by tracing over the raster data.
The significance of this cannot be overstated . The best quality image possible from this data can only ever approach the original raster image. When the electronic navigation chart (ENC) is displayed, with all possible display options enabled, the total amount of display information will still only approximate to that available from the raster image."
From a white paper by CherSoft, the company who produce "Easy Tide" for the UKHO. For a full understanding of the differences between RASTER and VECTOR charts download the white paper
Screenshot of a vector chart of Cowes
Here at VisitMyHarbour, we prefer RASTER charts...

This
chart package contains a full set of over 800 charts/chartlets
(400+ Full Sized charts) covering all UK inclucing all Scotland, Orkneys, Shetlands etc. and Irish waters, at all scales right down to harbour
plan level. They are derived from official
charts
thus have the same look and feel as familiar paper charts. The source
charts used in this DVD edition are dated Dec 2011, and users are responsible for
consulting notices to
mariners
for the latest updated information.
This is the quality of chart, superb detail
This "Charts for SeaClear" installed package is lightning fast. And best of all it uses charts you are truly used to, rich with detail...don't forget these raster charts are the original source of all information used to compile vector charts.
Find out about and see thumbnails of the charts that are actually embedded in this package Click HERE
Even if you already have an onboard dedicated plotter using vector charts, you'll find this package more than useful for planning at home, preparing routes and waypoints, etc.
Other uses...
Believe
it or not we've had birdwatchers asking about measuring distances off,
while logging migrating seabirds...SeaClear will do this.
Ship watchers...if you have an AIS set, you can connect this and plot passing shipping on the charts in SeaClear.
Harbourmasters..could use the package with an AIS to help deal with approaching vessels. We know our packages are already in use for harbour buoy/mooring laying operations.
Commercial...we know some ships masters have this running within their own cabins to keep an eye. We also know it's in use by ships pilots, who often prefer to carry their own independent familiar system.
Fishermen...save your favourite high yield trawl tracks, so you can re-use again.
Perhaps
the most compelling reason to buy this DVD is to simply have in your
own hands a completely up to date set of UK/Ireland charts for
reference...at £29.50 you cant get cheaper and you can't really go wrong

The
downside of all normal installed packages is they are locked to a single
machine, thus not portable. Our SeaClear packages can be
installed on multiple machines, at home, on board, at work. Our unique
system uses the DVD/USB as an "ignition key". It needs to be present to
start up our package, but then can even be taken out. Big improvement on
our original system, no more whirring DVDs or poking out USB sticks.
Lightning fast too.

to find that the DVD lived up to expectations. Easy to run from the DVD, and
yes full of Admiralty Charts for the coast of UK/Ireland. What wonderful
value. A system that is easy to install and use. There is no excuse for
going to sea without a full set of charts now.How much would it cost for
just ONE paper chart?I will recommend this to all my friends and
colleagues.Well done VisitMyHarbour. All your innovative hard work has
paid off.David M Humphrey, Burnham on Sea"

What is SeaClear ?
SeaClear
is a navigation program for Windows PCs. It has been around for many
years, and is well established and well regarded. The author of this
program has made it
freely
available, and many thousands of sailors use it for their day-to-day
chart plotting on-board. SeaClear can make use of free or
commercially available BSB charts, or
users
can scan and geo-reference their own paper charts.
Read our original artice on SeaClear, & download it free
Get the answer to our most asked question "How do I connect a GPS to my SeaClear installation? Click here to find out
SeaClear
supports most of the marine functions required, but it's a fairly
simple and uncomplicated piece of software use. With a GPS connected
to the PC, the user's
position
is plotted centrally on the best chart available. As the boat moves,
charts are automatically changed. Routes can be planned and waypoints
lifted.
Up till now there has
been no way of obtaining budget or up to date charts covering UK waters,
compatible with SeaClear. We like it so much WE HAVE NOW MADE THEM
AVAILABLE at an incredible £29.50...No chart packages can get anywhere
near this in price, it's almost HALF the price of the cheapest
alternatives, and SeaClear is considered superior to some budget
chartplotting programs too.
In
our opinion, there are too many proprietary chart plotting navigation
systems around, SeaClear can use BSB commercial or free charts, your own
scanned paper charts, and now our charts..even our flagship product VisiCharts run within SeaClear. SeaClear is fully expandable to cover YOUR next cruising areas, including the Med...no need to learn a new system. See the bottom of this article for sources of cheap/free charts.
To make use of this DVD package you will need: DVD: Windows XP , Vista or Windows 7. DVD drive needed.
How can we produce this package so cheaply ?
For starters we didn't have to write the program ! It was already there, 1000's already use it, it's good and reliable, and FREE.
All we had to do was produce the charts in such a way that it would
satisfy our licensors (UKHO) that they can't be copied and passed
around. Secondly, we already had experience building our VisiChart
(Charts and Google Earth satellite imagery combined) packages, plus all
the experience gained providing free charts within this pilotage
website.
We keep the packaging simple, it just comes with a little instruction booklet, the main manuals are in PDF form on the disc.
Who are we
?

If you've arrived on this page and you don't already know us, this will explain..
VisitMyHarbour is an award-winning
website, that has been providing free UK pilotage information to small
craft mariners for almost 3 years now. VisitMyHarbour has gone from
strength to strength, and you will find us well indexed on Google in
relation to the words Pilotage or Charts.
We currently attract between
1000 and 1400 unique
visitors a day.
VMH has many 100's of members in locations as far apart
as Singapore and Brazil, and interests ranging from hot air balooning
to navigating in the Fastnet. They use our unique online chart service,
which was another first for VisitMyHarbour.
Our commintment to customer
service is second to none, see some
recent comments:
"...,
you are wonderful. This kind of service is something I have not met for
years in the yachting world where everybody appears to have been born
with all nautical knowledge possible and look down upon people who are
still at their first steps - elderly though they may be. But if one
starts sailing at 55, one is bound to feel apprehensive and feeble at
many nautical issues. One wants to look ahead as far is possible in
order to be able to tackle only those difficulties that are not to be
foreseen whatsoever.
Again, thank
you"
"Wow,
That's what I call a fast service! Thanks very
much,..."
"...–
bless you – especially for your honesty – so many people these days
attempt to flannel their way out of things it is refreshing to get an
“Oops, sorry” reply. And of course – me being me I assumed
that I was
being
dense!!"

"Hi

discovered you - are you new? When did you start? Did you have charts
on the site last year? It is an excellent quick reference."

When you deal up with
VisitMyHarbour.com, you are not
enriching the coffers of some moneygrubbing PLC. You're not accessing
illegal, ripped off,
hacked and cracked C-Map charts. Nor are you dealing with a shark of a
broker in a smart blazer, and half a dozen dodgy companies he's
laundering your hard earned money through. You are dealing with genuine
hands on boating enthuiasts, who work hard and love the sea.

for."

What exactly is in the package and how does it work ?
The package consists of one DVD, and a small booklet. These are sent 1st class post when you order.
To install the package on any Windows machine, you simply drag the one big folder into your Disc C, and then the drag three shortcuts to your desktop.
It is really simple, see the "How to Install the 2012 "Charts for Seaclear" Video, link(s) in right hand column.
Once installed you will find the shortcuts will take you to:
- Your lightning fast installed SeaClear package, pre loaded with all UK/Irish waters charts
- NEW an embedded comprehensive, searchable, help section written by technical author Richard Fairman BA
- A
folder containing the "Official" SeaClear manual in PDF form PRINT AND
READ, other useful PDFs, MapCal and "My Own Charts" folder, so you can
expand this system with your own charts. A sample chart of Brazil is
already included for you to test.
.
All
charts are locked to the device (rather than one nominated machine as
is normally the case with navigation programs). Advantage...this
package is portable between any Windows machine. Disadvantage..you need
to have a functioning DVD drive on any machine you want to use these
on. Once the package is started the DVD can be taken out and put by.

Best of all the package uses standard official charts at full size. Changing between scales and areas is really simple. By default (user changeable) clicking anywhere within the UK will bring up the largest scale chart. Right clicking will enable you to "back out" of that view, by choosing a smaller scale chart, centered on the same area. This can be done multiple times till you get exactly the overview you want.
More information about the "Charts for SeaClear UK/Ireland 2012" package
Chart
datum:
Nearly
all the charts (99%)in this package are already, or have been
re-referenced to WGS84 datum. All charts with a -W suffix are
WGS84 compatible (no matter what the
information
in the chart panel says). Charts without a -W suffix are referenced
to the chart itself. Users are advised that differences in datum can
amount to 09' (nine
hundreths
of a minute), which can mount up to over 200 yards. Users are warned
to check the datum of the loaded chart (-W or not), and also to pay
attention to information
in
the chart panel relating to the age and reliability of the source
data. Accurate GPS WGS84 positioning may be far more accurate that
the chart itself.
Good
seamanship dictates that a sensible offing should be maintained from
any charted dangers, bearing in mind weather and tidal conditions at
the time. Do not allow GPS
positioning
to lead you into taking risks that you wouldn't otherwise choose.
Encryption
and subsequent restrictions:
This pack is tied to the individual DVD you have purchased,
therefore you will need a functioning DVD drive to start this up
at all times. The DVD/USB only acts as a key to start your installed
version, it spins ONCE when the pack is started.
All printing has been disabled while this package is running, to meet UKHO restrictions on
printing anything more than small copies. A4 prints can be handled by the Gadwin Screenprint software included with
this pack (or get Gadwin here NOW...highly recommended DOWNLOAD ).
To
print out route/waypoint lists, simply save the file to your desktop,
then print after the chart package is closed down. Likewise with
screenshots of charts (using Gadwin or Print Screen)
Apart from the restrictions mentioned above, SeaClear retains all of its functionality.
For
actual real time use at sea, it's recommended that
1.
You have a decent power supply for your laptop, running from the
ships batteries.
2.
Have the laptop installed well within the boat, and away from any
splashing or seawater.
Start
up sequence:
Make sure you've installed the package. Leave the original DVD in the
drive, and click the shortcut. You'll get a EULA, a splash screen, then
SeaClear will start with a world map showing. It is ready to use. Normal start up speed is around 7 seconds ! The DVD will have spun just once, and in fact it can now be taken out.
Experienced
users:
Use this package with your already established
SeaClear
installation:
No
problem, copy your own scanned and calibrated charts, .KAP or .WCI
charts into "My Own Charts" folder. Use MapCal to scan for new charts,
it'll
find them and the package will use them in conjunction with the embedded
charts. Routes prepared on other SeaClear installations will run
normally on this package.
Connecting
GPS:
Buy
a GPS dongle or our own Compatible GPS for SeaClear which has full SeaClear friendly instructions and back up phone support. If you buy your own GPS dongle, install
with instructions that come with it. Find out the Com port number it
is using and the Baud rate, point SeaClear at
this
port, set Baud rate. SeaClear locks on to the position. Full
instruction in the manual. Otherwise connect your existing GPS using
a serial or USB cable and link
SeaClear
to that. Serial cable connections are by far the easiest to set up. See help and videos in the right hand column.

Other charts and areas available for SeaClear
Believe it or not, the UKHO are not the only ones producing original surveys and charts in the UK. Some areas of Scotland (where ships are unlikely to venture) are being surveyed specially for intrepid small craft mariners. These charts are made by Antares:
"Antares Charts is a source of 'unofficial' very large scale electronic
charts and related pilotage information created by unqualified enthusiasts.
Focusing on the West Coast of Scotland it is aimed at experienced
navigators, to supplement information available from more authoritative
providers."
Best of all they are inexpensive and will work fine with our "Charts for SeaClear" packages. Get the best of both worlds, official charts and private locally surveyed extra large scale charts:

SeaClear is fully expandable to cover many areas of the world:
Free
charts in BSB format are available for US and Brazilian waters. Google
"NOAA" or "DHN Brazil" to find the latest versions of these. We
provide versions of SeaClear pre-loaded with many of these charts that
are "Ready to use", for VMH members only.
This 2012 package contains an overview chart of Brazil for testing in "My Own Charts" folder.

Yachtua, a Ukranian website, have been maunfacturing and offering SeaClear compatible charts for
some time now, as downloads in BSB or SeaClear WCI format. They cover
most of the Med, inc Turkey and Greece, plus they have West Indies
coverage. This seems to fill the gaps nicely between the free BSBs and
our own UK offering. Their prices seem reasonable at 3.50 Euros
per downloaded chart, and although we haven't tested their charts out,
they seem to have a good reputation. We stress they have nothing to do
with VisitMyHarbour, we link to them for your benefit...have a look:
